Best AI receptionist for plumbers
A plumbing business needs three things from whoever answers the phone: get real emergencies to the on-call tech fast, book or capture routine jobs, and stop paying for junk calls. This guide compares the AI receptionists we track on exactly those points, with prices read from each vendor's own pricing page.
Prices checked October 27, 2026. Vendors change pricing without notice, and taxes, phone-number fees and add-ons aren't included. Confirm on the vendor's page before you sign up.
The short answer
- Lowest cost for a small shop: Upfirst. Its $24.95 Starter plan (30 calls) includes warm transfers, scheduling and in-call texting, the same core features as its bigger plans.
- Lots of repeat callers: Goodcall. It bills per unique caller per month, so a customer who calls three times about one job counts once.
- Busy shop that wants one fixed bill: NextPhone. $199/month flat with unlimited inbound calls.
- Want Spanish on every call: Rosie. English and Spanish are on every plan, but transfers and calendar booking start on the $149 Scale plan.
We haven't run hands-on test calls yet. These picks are based on each vendor's published plans and features. See our methodology.
What plumbing callers actually need
Most calls to a plumber fall into four groups:
- Emergencies. Burst pipes, active leaks, sewage backups, no water. These need a live transfer to whoever is on call, not a message.
- Routine work. Water heaters, drain cleaning, fixture installs, estimates. These can be booked or taken as a detailed lead.
- Existing customers. "Is the tech still coming today?" A message and a text to you is usually enough.
- Noise. Robocalls, sales pitches, wrong numbers. This matters more than it sounds, because some services bill these calls.
The service you pick has to handle the first group well. The rest is about cost.
Comparison: features plumbers ask about
| Service | From | Entry plan includes | Transfers on entry plan? | Spam billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | $24.95/mo | 30 calls/mo | Yes, warm transfers on every plan | Spam, silent calls and calls under 15 seconds not billed |
| Goodcall | $79/mo | 100 unique customers/mo | You choose who receives transfers (pricing page) | Spam and wrong numbers not counted |
| NextPhone | $199/mo | Unlimited inbound calls | Yes, warm and announced transfers | Flat rate, so spam doesn't change the bill |
| Rosie | $49/mo | 250 minutes/mo | No. Warm and live transfers start on Scale ($149) | Spam detection on every plan; billing treatment not stated |
| Dialzara | $29/mo | 60 minutes/mo | Blind transfer only on Lite; warm transfer from Pro ($99) | Bills talk time to the second |

What it costs at a typical plumbing volume
Headline prices don't compare well, because these services bill in different units. Here is our math at list price for 100 answered calls a month, averaging 3 minutes each (300 minutes), assuming every caller is a different person. We picked the cheapest published plan that covers the volume, including published overage.
| Service | Cheapest plan for 100 calls / 300 min | Estimated monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | Premium (90 calls) + 10 extra calls at $1.00 | $69.95 |
| Goodcall | Starter (100 unique callers) | $79.00 |
| Dialzara | Business Pro (220 min) + 80 min at $0.45 | $135.00 |
| Rosie | Scale (1,000 min). Professional's 250 min doesn't cover it and overage isn't published | $149.00 |
| NextPhone | Pro (unlimited inbound) | $199.00 |
Change the numbers to match your call log in the cost-at-your-volume estimator. If your calls run long, per-call and per-caller plans get relatively cheaper. If many calls come from the same customers, Goodcall gets cheaper still.

How to choose
- Count your calls first. Pull last month's call log. Note how many calls you'd want answered, the average length, and how many came from repeat numbers. This decides which billing model is cheapest.
- Make sure transfers are on the plan you're pricing. For a plumber, emergency transfers aren't optional. Rosie's $49 plan and Dialzara's $29 Lite plan don't include warm transfers.
- Write the emergency rule yourself. For example: "If the caller says water is actively leaking, transfer to the on-call number." The AI follows your instructions; it doesn't know your rules on day one.
- Add a safety script. For a gas smell or water near electrical panels, the receptionist should tell the caller to leave the area and call the gas utility or 911 before anything else.
- Decide when it answers. Overflow-only or after-hours mode lets you keep taking calls yourself while the AI catches what you miss.
- Ask about your job software. We didn't see native ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber integrations on the pricing pages we checked. Most of these services connect through Zapier. Ask the vendor how a new lead gets into your system before you buy.
- Use the trial on real calls. Upfirst offers 14 days, Rosie and NextPhone 7 days, and Goodcall lets you build and test a demo agent before you connect a number.
Questions to ask a vendor
- If the on-call tech doesn't pick up a transfer, what happens? A message, a text, a second number?
- Do spam calls, hang-ups and wrong numbers count against my plan?
- What happens when I run out of calls or minutes mid-month?
- Can I forward my existing number, or do I have to port it?
